CENG Facilities Safe and Secure; Preparing for Potential Effects of Hurricane Irene
Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG), based in Baltimore, MD, is in
full, around-the-clock preparation mode for the potential impacts of
Hurricane Irene. The safety of our employees and neighbors, and the
protection of our facilities, including Calvert Cliffs in Lusby,
Maryland, and our Nine Mile Point and R.E. Ginna facilities in New York,
is the top priority.
While it is too early to predict the impacts of the storm, a CENG Fleet
structure team has been activated to ensure necessary support to any of
our locations impacted by the storm. Our facilities at Calvert Cliffs,
R.E. Ginna and Nine Mile Point have emergency safety procedures in
place, which include early and extensive preparation for storms. We
practice the plan routinely. We also have back-up systems in place to
safely operate the facility.
We will comply with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) rigorous
safety requirements in evaluating plant conditions as the storm
Specific safety actions being taken:
We have removed all on-site trailers
We are conducting additional safety walk-downs of all outside areas
surrounding our plants to ensure equipment that could become airborne
due to high winds is tied-down or removed and placed indoors.
We are ensuring equipment on the waterfront is prepared to withstand
high winds and heavy rains.
We are evaluating our roof conditions.
We are topping off diesel-fuel tanks and testing emergency generators
to support the plant and offices in the event off-site power is lost.
We will continue monitoring the situation and keep the media updated
throughout the weekend.
