BALTIMORE, Dec.14, 2008 - Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), today announced that approximately 65 linemen and support personnel will be leaving Maryland for Massachusetts to assist National Grid with electric service restoration following snow and ice storms last week which interrupted service to hundreds of thousands of customers in the Northeastern United States. They are scheduled to depart Monday morning at approximately 7:00 a.m. from the Maryland House on I-95 in Aberdeen, Maryland. On Saturday, approximately 70 linemen and support staff headed to New Hampshire to assist with restoration efforts there.
"Once again BGE has answered the call from other utilities in need following major weather events," said Stephen J. Woerner, senior vice president of gas and electric operations and planning for BGE. "Our crews are ready to face the difficult challenges associated with snow and ice storms and will work around-the-clock to help restore service as safely and as quickly as possible. We continue to maintain adequate field resources locally to support any restoration efforts in our Central Maryland service area." This is BGE's fourth major mutual assistance deployment this fall. In addition to the crews deployed on Saturday, in September crews were sent to the Texas Gulf Coast and Cleveland, Ohio following Hurricane Ike.
BGE is part of a mutual assistance network of utilities and stands ready to respond following severe storms or other emergencies that lead to widespread service interruptions outside of its Central Maryland service territory. All costs associated with responding to a mutual assistance requests are the responsibility of the requesting utility.
