BALTIMORE, March 11, 2009 - Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), today announced that it has been recognized with the Emergency Assistance Award for outstanding efforts to assist other utilities during large scale electric restoration efforts following ice storms and hurricanes in 2008. The award comes from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the association of investor-owned electric companies which represents approximately 70 percent of the electric power industry in the United States.
"BGE and its contractors' efforts to provide mutual assistance to electric utilities in six states following devastating storms in 2008 is a testament to our employees' and contract personnel's dedication to helping people in need whether they are right here in Maryland or hundreds of miles away in another utility's service area," said Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr., president of BGE. "The nearly 300 dedicated individuals who participated in one or more of these assignments braved extreme temperatures and other challenging conditions, including being separated from their own families for days and weeks at a time, to help restore electric service to hundreds of thousands of customers outside of BGE's service area as safely and as quickly as possible. I am pleased to accept this award on their behalf."
In 2008, BGE linemen, support staff and contractors worked more than 165,000 man-hours helping restore electric service in Alabama, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas following Hurricanes Gustav, Hannah, and Ike as well as snow, ice and other severe storms. They provided assistance to five power companies including Alabama Power, Cleco, Entergy, National Grid and Public Service of New Hampshire.
BGE is part of a mutual assistance network of utilities and stands ready to respond following severe storms or other emergencies that lead to widespread electric service interruptions outside of its Central Maryland service territory. These assignments are accepted only after it is determined that they will not adversely affect BGE's ability to respond to emergencies in its own service area. All costs associated with responding to a mutual assistance requests are the responsibility of the requesting utility.
