BALTIMORE, March 25, 2009 - Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced that approximately 60 employees will spend the day helping renovate eight homes in the Monument-McElderry-Fayette community as part of a company commitment to assist Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity in renovating 100 homes over five years. Volunteers will prime, paint, insulate, frame and air seal the homes from 9:00 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. Media are encouraged to gather at 10:00 a.m. outside of 2123 and 2125 Jefferson Street for interview and photo opportunities.
"Today's event is one of several Day of Caring efforts during which employee volunteers assist community based organizations," said Mark D. Case, senior vice president of strategy and regulatory affairs for BGE and also a Chesapeake Habitat board member. This Day of Caring is also an expansion of BGE's commitment to contribute, through the Constellation Energy Foundation, $500,000 to Chesapeake Habitat to support community revitalization by making energy efficient homes affordable for limited income families in need of housing." The financial contribution is funded by shareholders. The first installment was made in 2008.
BGE recognizes that conservation is the best way for customers to manage energy costs. The company also understands that limited income customers may be challenged to purchase energy efficient products such as ENERGY STAR® appliances, upgraded insulation and other materials that help keep energy costs down. BGE's collaborative relationship with Chesapeake Habitat is crucial to helping the non-profit organization with the very important work of making energy efficient home ownership affordable for limited income families. It also enhances Baltimore's efforts to decrease the number of vacant properties and should encourage other residents to take more energy conservation steps in their own homes.
Renovations to one of the homes should be completed within the week, while the others are expected to be completed by June. These homes represent the first wave of homes in this community to be renovated by BGE and Chesapeake Habitat. Annually, approximately 4,200 BGE and Constellation Energy employees volunteer for Day of Caring events.
