CENG Honored for Partnership in Education by College of Southern Maryland
Presents $50,000 scholarship gift for Nuclear Engineering Technology
program
BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recognized Constellation Energy
Nuclear Group, LLCSM (CENG) with the 2011 Partnership in
Education award during the College's annual Leading Edge Awards
Banquet on Wednesday, June 22. CENG also presented a $50,000 gift to CSM
for Nuclear Engineering Technology (NET) degree program scholarships.
The Leading Edge awards recognize local businesses, agencies and
individuals for their contributions to the college throughout the year.
"CSM has been an outstanding educational partner with CENG. This award
recognizes our commitment to educate and train the next generation of
the nuclear workforce. But without CSM's shared vision and commitment to
the Southern Maryland community, we could not have achieved this level
of success," said George Gellrich, Site Vice President, Calvert
Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP), who accepted the award on behalf of
CENG.
CSM and CENG work together to offer degrees to students who wish to
pursue careers in the nuclear energy field. Since 2008, CENG has
provided CSM with approximately $330,000 to assist with the development
of the NET degree program and create a CENG Welding Lab at the Center
for Trades and Energy Training. $75,000 is earmarked for scholarships to
the NET program; this funding was also leveraged to receive more than
$130,000 in Nuclear Regulatory Commission grants for additional
scholarships and other program costs. 19 students received scholarships
in the initial year of the program and the first graduates are expected
in May 2012.
"Calvert Cliffs' 35 year history of safe and reliable operations is a
direct reflection on our dedicated employees, who raise their families
in Southern Maryland. I can think of no better investment than the
students at CSM who seek to carry on our commitment to excellence. With
this $50,000 gift for scholarships, we hope to create a robust pipeline
of local workers who are highly skilled, educated and committed to
safety and the Southern Maryland community," said Gellrich.
Calvert Cliffs is located in Lusby, Md. and began generating electricity
in 1975. Since then, Calvert Cliffs has continually set records for
power production and worker safety. CSM is a public, regional community
college with campuses in La Plata, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick and
Waldorf, Md.
